Johnny Manziel was indicted by a grand jury on a misdemeanor charge stemming from a domestic violence complaint by his ex-girlfriend this morning.
The incident which occurred on January 30, involved Johnny hitting his girlfriend ( Colleen Crowley ) and then threatening to kill her. It sprouted from an argument near the valet station at a Dallas hotel that escalated as the two got in Johnny’s car. The valet ignored Crowley’s pleas for help as the two continued to argue. When Crowley attempted to jump out of the car, Johnny grabbed her, forced her back into the car, and struck her.
The record shows that Crowley claimed to have been hit so hard, she temporarily lost hearing in one of her ears. The indictment accuses Johnny of striking Crowley and “forcing (her) into a vehicle and against a vehicle dashboard.”
ESPN reported that: “She was granted a protective order that requires Manziel to not see her for two years, stay at least 500 feet from her home and place of work, and pay $12,000 in legal fees.”
Manziel faces a charge of misdemeanor assault related to family violence, which carries up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Since its only an indictment charge, Johnny can still plead not guilty against the charges.
Johnny’s attorney, Jim Darnell, responded saying, “We certainly respect the decision of the grand jury but of course they only hear part of the case: What the D.A. chooses to share with them. We don’t know what that was,” the statement said. “This case will now be assigned to a court in Dallas County where the parties are able to join the issue. Johnny will certainly plead ‘not guilty’ and we believe the evidence will support that plea. Out of respect for Ms. Crowley, we will not try the case in the press. We do, however, believe that Johnny will be acquitted at the conclusion of the case.”
While the case is still premature, Johnny’s record is starting to pile up. This is one of many instances where Manziel has gotten himself in trouble with a team, league, or law enforcement in the past year.
As if things weren’t bad enough for Johnny, his last agent, Drew Rosenhaus, dropped Manziel last week. So now Johnny is jobless, agent-less, and seems like, hopeless.
