My man, Russell Westbrook, is an absolute animal. In case any of you missed it last night, he went absolute beast mode and put up some ridiculous numbers that we haven’t seeing a long time. He finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 20 assists as the Thunder beat the Clippers. No one has had a 25, 10, 20, game since Magic did it in 1988. Thats some elite status right there.
Westbrook was 9 of 15 from the field and was 7-7 on his free throws. It was the 30th triple-double of his career, his 11th this season, second straight, and his third in his past five games. The Thunder are unbeaten this season when Westbrook posts a triple-double, and 26-4 overall when Westbrook does so.
Westbrook is finally starting to prove that he may be the Thunder’s #1 instead of Durant. According to ESPN’s player power rankings, Durant is #4 and Westbrook is #5. I’d argue however, that Westbrook is more important than Durant. Last year when Durant was hurt, Westbrook put the team on his back and was a triple double machine. He was the only reason Thunder City stayed afloat without Durant. Durant is a quality player, but being a forward, its hard to make as many plays happen. Because Westbrook is a guard and brings the ball up the court, he has the ability to make plays happen and find the open looks.
But Westbrook is so damn aggressive. He’s one of the only guards I’ve ever watched that has the tenacity to out-rebound all the big men in the paint. He charges in there and just outworks the forwards and centers. Not many guards have the aggression to go as hard in the paint as he does, and slam the ball down with such a vengeance. I mean this dude just hates the rim.
Its not to take anything away from Durant as he’s scored at least 30 points in all four games in March. In March alone, he’s averaging 31 points, 11.3 rebounds and 7.3 assists. But Russell Westbrook is just an absolute work horse. He’s almost averaging a triple double this season ( 24.1 PPG, 10.5 APG, 7.5 RPG ) and is helping the Thunder make their case for being a powerhouse in the west. The Thunder have two of the best players in the world and they’re only getting better. So the Western Conference, watch out, Russell Westbrook is coming.
