Kevin Durant was swarmed with media as soon as he arrived at his hometown, Washington D.C.
Durant’s free agency is available for another 8 months but fans and media acted is if it were tomorrow. Durant made it clear last season that he was focused on the present, and he was going to play to the best of his ability now, for the team he’s currently on. The star will be one of the hottest free agents come the end of the season, but for right now, Durant wants to win with the team he’s on.
“I just try to go about every day, just focus on one day,” Durant said. “I don’t think about the future too hard. I’ll worry about that stuff when I get there. I’ve been saying ‘I don’t know’ for a long, long time, but I’m really just focused on our team, happy I’m playing again, and that kind of takes over.”
Durant and the Thunder are currently operating one of the best offenses in the league. They are 1st in the league in rebounds per game (49.9) and 2nd in points per game (113.3). As they take on the 3-3 Wizards, fans from Durant’s home town may be rooting for him just as much as for the Wizards; Durant doesn’t necessarily agree with that.
“I’m not saying anything is wrong with the fans, just me, I’m thinking as a player,” Durant said. “On the other side, I wouldn’t like it. But the fans are going to do what they’re going to do. I appreciate all the support that gets thrown our way, but I’m just looking at it as an opposing player, if I was on that team and they came in here and did that, I wouldn’t like it. But the fans, they support us, throughout the whole league they make the league what it is, so it’s nothing against them, I’m just talking as a player.”
While players like all the support they get, they don’t always necessarily agree with it. While Durant has to play in the awkward environment for the time being, it probably wont affect the hot start he’s been on. Durant’s primary focus has been on scoring and winning, and so far his average of 30+ points per game has led the Thunder to a 4-3 record.
It will be interesting to see how Durant will react and play tonight, but one things for sure, he only focused on the present.
