With Megatron announcing his retirement, all I can think about is how bad the Lions are going to suck this next season.
Calvin Johnson has been one of the most dominant wide receivers over the last 9 seasons. He extended his 1,000 yard reception streak again this year, making it 6 consecutive seasons with over 1,000 yards receiving. Since he’s been in Detroit, he’s broken just about every significant record there are for receivers. He currently holds Lion’s franchise records in receptions (731), receiving yards (11,619), receiving TD’s (83), and receiving yards per game (86.1). But now that he’s retiring, the Lions future doesn’t look too bright.
Matt Stafford is okay. He’s certainly not a bad quarterback, but he doesn’t play up with the elite quarterbacks. He’s been very fortunate to have Calvin Johnson on the field with him over the course of his career. But the problem is that the Lions offense still sucked even with Megatron on the field. Now that he’s retiring, I have no idea what Detroit is going to do for points.
Last season Detroit had 33 receiving touchdowns over only 9 rushing touchdowns. With Detroit’s main receiver out of the picture, their offense is going to make some serious adjustments. Not only will Stafford’s favorite target be off the field, but now the coverage on defense will be different. No longer will defenses surrender their #1 corner to cover Johnson, now they’re going to spread their DB’s out and play tight defense against a lackluster offense. Detroit cant rely on Golden Tate to explode next year and hope that they can ride that into the playoffs. What Detroit needs to do is effectively run the ball.
Detroit’s run game is non existent. They didn’t have a single running back with a 100 yard game last season. I mean I don’t expect Ameer Abdullah to be on that Adrian Peterson status, but the dude couldn’t even put up 600 yards after playing in every single game. The Lions are going to have to put in some serious work this offseason on the ground if they expect to win some games. The harsh reality is that you cant throw on every down like the Lion’s tend to do, especially without a franchise receiver.
Calvin Johnson had a hell of a career in Detroit and its a shame that he never had the opportunity to win a ring or play for a competitive franchise. But Megatron is a beast and regardless of how bad the Lions are going to suck next year, at least they were able to host such a respectable player for all those years.
