I’m not a “Hot Dog Guy” by any means, but put me in a baseball stadium and that all changes.
There something in the air within every ballpark of this great nation, all the way from little league to the big leagues. What is this exactly.. I’m not sure, but I do know that infects all the fans with a craving for hot dogs. As you step into the stadium you are instantly smacked in the face with the smell of freshly cut grass, peanuts, beer, and of course hot dogs. All of these smells together is truly what America smells like. But the question that remains is, why does hot dogs and baseball work? Well I’ve thought this over a bit and here are some reasons to explain this phenomenon.
First, when I, and I think most people, imagine a hot dog outside the ballpark they are kind of disgusted. “Do you know what’s in a hot dog?” Frankly, no I do not, and I don’t want to know the answer and I don’t want to ponder this thought either. When you’re at the ballpark though this thought is fleeting if even present because you don’t wanna be worrying about that, you are focused on your team pursuing a victory.
Second, hot dogs are a one handed food. Probably not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of hot dogs, but sneaky very important aspect of consumption at a baseball game. Baseball more so than any other sport calls for fan awareness because the ball is put out of play so often. The one hand aspect of the hot dog gives the fan piece of mind when in the stands because it leaves that free hand to snag a foul ball that is flying at you. This is more underrated, but I believe to be a very important reason why hot dogs go with baseball specifically.
Third, hot dogs are just quick and easy. You holler to a vendor passing by, shell out way more money than should for a hot dog and he hands you this treat right at your seat. Such an easy transaction that saves you from getting up and waiting in line only to miss some of the action is ideal when at the park. Plus, usually the dogs can be eaten in 5 bites or less so there is no messing around. It is a food that means business and great snack.
Finally, my favorite reason why hot dogs are consumed at the ballpark is the taste. The hot dog itself is okay, but throw some condiments on there and it is good, and what really is the kicker that ties it all together is that bun. Hot dog buns make the hot dog. They are so soft and delicious that I could honestly just eat them by themselves. Not only does it taste good though, but it is the perfect shape made specifically for that dog. The two make a perfect match for gametime, and the best part is they are small enough that you can snack on a few over the course of 9 innings and fill up perfectly.
Baseball would be nothing without hot dogs and hot dogs would be nothing without baseball and that is why they work so well together.
