Last year the Carolina Panthers were unstoppable. They entered the playoffs with the no. 1 seed in the NFC after a stellar 15-1 season. Their quarterback Cam Newton, won the MVP, and they were favorited to win the Super Bowl. We know the rest.
Cam Newton got tossed around like a chew toy by the Broncos defense and they ultimately lost the Super Bowl in one of the sloppiest and most anticlimactic Super Bowls in History. It was a defensive battle until the end, and Cam Newton was clearly out of his element. The loss was devastating to Cam and the Panthers, as Newton pouted like a little girl, and abruptly left the press conference after ignoring multiple questions after the game. Newton was rattled and it seems like he never got his mind right.
The Panthers are 1-5 through their first 6 games this year and to put it lightly, they suck. Of course its not hard to tell that they blow this year, but how in the hell did such a powerhouse team have such a devastating downfall? The answer is defense.
The Panthers are averaging 26.8 points a game, which marks 5th in the league. Their offense hasn’t slowed down from last year, especially with the recent comeback of star WR Kelvin Benjamin. Cam isn’t playing up to his MVP level from last year, but he’s still producing at a very high level. But their offense isn’t the problem, its their horrible defense.
The Panthers defense is allowing 29.3 points per game, which is tied for 29th worst in the league. Just by comparing the numbers, the Panthers are averaging a loss every game. You may attribute the defensive collapse to the loss of Josh Norman due to contract issues, but the truth is that the Panthers are weak in every defensive aspect.
The Panthers allowed Matt Ryan to pass for 500 yards and Julio Jones to receive 300 yards in one single game. That is not because of the loss of one cornerback. Everyone on that field had the opportunity to prevent that from happening, and it just didn’t. There was no pressure put on Matt Ryan, and Julio was a man playing with a bunch of boys. The week after that, they allowed Jacquizz Rodgers, a third string running back, to rush for over 100 yards in Tampa Bay’s win over Carolina. They have a lot of problems, and no solutions.
Its not crazy to think that Carolina would underperform after last years performance, but no one could’ve predicted this bad of a start. Carolina is one of five teams to play in a Super Bowl, then start the next season 1-5. At this point it would take an absolute miracle for Carolina to make the playoffs. If Jesus himself played for the Panthers, it probably still wouldn’t be enough to turn this season around. So if you’re on the panthers, maybe try finding a new dance move, because it seems like all your talent was thrown out when the dab was thrown out. Better luck next year.
