The Broncos won Super Bowl 50, but not because of their offense. Manning, one of the greatest to ever play, didnt really contribute to game based off of his stats. He played a mediocre game at best and his ring should be marked with an asterisk. When the Broncos began the season he was not even in the list of 12-0 teams. As well, the Broncos’ success cannot be placed on one individual. Both the offensive and defensive players were the main reason for this success. The offensive line allowed Manning a large amount of time to make proper passes, and the talented receivers were able to catch what he threw. As well, the defensive line was able to withhold majority of the teams from capitalizing while they were on offense, allowing Manning to have a point game. However, later in the season, Manning sustained an injury to his foot. Because of this, the Broncos were in a tough situation.
Alex Moran, the quarterback from the Spike TV Show “Blue Mountain State”, consistently states that the job of a backup quarterback is the best job on a team. They have the ability to be relaxed, chill out, and ride their averageness through their career. However, this is not true. The position of backup quarterback is the worst and sometimes hardest position on the team. Throughout the season they must always be working as hard as the starter, and during it all they get no recognition. The scariest part that they must always face, is what happened this season. There is a constant fear that they will fall into a routine, stop trying as hard, and not perform well when they are finally called up. Similar to Tom Brady in 2001, Brock Osweiler was called upon in a time of injury, and proved his ability with great success. Even though people were discouraged by his first game against the chiefs, Brock did not give up. He kept working, and proved himself in the victory over the Patriots in week 12, clinching the number 1 seed.
This is not an article saying that Brock is the GOAT. As I stated earlier, this championship cannot be attributed to one person, and that is not what I am trying to say. However, a percentage of their success can be attributed with Brock. No one was looking at him expecting to be the better than Manning. Lets be honest, he is the backup for a reason. However, the fact that he was able to perform at a level close to the starter, as well as lead the team to victory over the Patriots is quite impressive. Brock Osweiler is the most underrated and under appreciated player on the Denver team. His significance is overlooked, but was certainly a factor in the Bronco’s success.
