The man, the myth, the legend: David Ortiz. Where to begin? For basically a decade now, Big Papi has been one of the main faces of Boston sports, and in some moments, the hero that we all needed. I can remember the days when Big Papi and Manny Ramirez were running the show and Boston and their talents working together ensured that anyone who wasn’t a Red Sox fan hated us because we were so good. I can remember in April of 2013 when Ortiz truly became a unify factor for the city. People were weak, and he was the hero they all needed.
However now, sadly, it is time we say goodbye. The minute that Ortiz announced he would be retiring, people begged him to reconsider. And now, throughout this season, the every different cities baseball stadium has been doing what the NBA did for Kobe, and gave him a farewell fit for a king. However, there’s a difference between Ortiz and Kobe. Despite the fact that Kobe was one of the best to ever play, his last season was not his best. Ortiz has been having a great time during this season, and some have gone as far as saying it’s his best season yet. So now we need to ask, why is he retiring?
I don’t think that Big Papi wants to retire any more than his fans want him to. But he can’t go back now, and there are two reasons why. The first reason is that he already got the whole special treatment. This emotional goodbye from the MLB is not one that everyone receives. If he were to play next season, he would change from one of the most loved players, to the most hated. He can’t do that to these teams. Richard Jefferson of the Cleveland Cavaliers said that he was going to retire, but then after winning the NBA championship decided against it. This was not a major issue. The league had not shown him love for his talents that year because, frankly, he wasn’t good enough for it. But if Ortiz were to do that? Yikes that wouldn’t end well.
This brings us to the second reason. The second reason is his legacy. If he were to stay, he would be hated by everyone for putting them through that whole thing just to still play. That’s kind of a douchey move. As well, he is about to go out on top. As I said earlier, Ortiz is having one of the best seasons of his career. When he leaves at the end of this season, everyone will look back in amazement at the fact that, even in his last season, Big Papi still ran shit better than when he started.
