“Do your job” Three simple words. Today we associate them with a team, but I hope tomorrow we can associate them with a nation. If there is nothing else that the Patriot way has taught us, we do know that “Do Your Job” is directly correlated with success. Bill Belichick has instilled this mantra within a franchise and has ultimately bred five championships. I beg the question – if this short phrase can lead a team to victory, who says it can’t work on a larger scale?
Political opinions aside, it is obvious that there are currently issues going on in this nation. You may be on the furthest of left and see problems or the furthest of right and see trouble as well, but like a team may have differing opinions in a locker room, a country has the same. In order to settle these issues, I believe we should model our approach based on that of the New England Patriots. Who doesn’t like to win? Nobody… or at least no American. I think this essential fact that is woven into the fabric of the American identity needs to be harnessed and used to progress our nation.
The reason why our world (and our country, specifically) is so passionate about sports is because of how they reflect life and inspire hope – there is nothing more magical than seeing a group of individuals come together to achieve a common goal. So why not use the approach that has driven the most accomplished NFL team of the past decade and potentially ever?
“Do Your Job” strips away the grand idea of a having Super Bowl trophy come back to your city, which can seem daunting, Instead, he breaks it down to an individual level. This model can be adopted on a national scale and I believe will truly help us grow. By simply having each American do his or her own job and worry about their own situation they can have a sense of empowerment accompanied with a deep sense of personal responsibility. This will help them strive for achievable goals without trying to attack the daunting large scale problems they believe this nation is facing.
With everyone worrying about doing their job to the best of their ability I think this will not only keep everyone driven on their own path, but in turn reduce conflict. Just worry about your job, and do it. If everybody, or even most people can adopt this mantra, I bet this country will reach new heights unseen to human life as we know it.
I understand this theory may seem a bit idealistic and will not change our country over night, but I do truly believe that like any sports team, America can succeed by living according to “Do Your Job”. I hope this made you think a little about what your job is and how you can focus on it and just do it.
