What a shame. As a fan of greatness in the sport of football, a fan of heroic feats, and a fan of truly great performances, I am saddened by what occurred on Monday as far as the play of the quarterback of the Denver Broncos. What I feared would happen did happen and it was even worse than I expected.
This game was not only terrible to watch, but also terrible for the history of the game. From this point on, Peyton will be known as a two time Super Bowl winning quarterback, which puts him another notch above his prior self. This is not deserving though. First of all he had statistically the worst season of any Super Bowl winning quarterback ever. In addition though he had a less than stellar performance in his Super Bowl start with only 141 yards 1 int and 1 lost fumble. If he did not have such a great defense behind him he would have been hated on for this game, and deservingly so, but things turned out okay for him and now he got a free ring.
This bothers me because it will hurt the nature of how we remember Peyton. Without a question Eli manning deserves his Super Bowls much more than his older brother. Not only did he have better numbers, but he stepped up when the pressure was on to make heroic performances. That is what the sport needs, it needs great moments that spark great memories of amazement for the accomplishments of athletes. It’s just sad that Peyton will be in a false light for the rest of time, it’s cheating future fans out of actual appreciation for other performances of quarterbacks with maybe not as great regular season careers.
